The iPad: Reason To Mock Apple & Reasons Why It’ll Succeed.

A quick note from a self-professed Mac hater.

I will admit that I am that angry PC guy that absolutely loathes Apple’s products & fans. It’s a long story related to rejection nearly a decade ago. Let’s just say Apple wasn’t meant for me and I have sworn off all things Mac.

It’s not denial I swear.

I will concede that Apple has taken great measure to change how things are done when it comes to marrying common computing, communication and entertainment tasks with new technology. What they lack in reasonable pricing and sometimes stupefying preference of form over function (I’m looking @ you Macbook Air), they make up for in risk taking and knowing their customer base. They follow their map strictly with success coming in the tune of billions and have managed to “inspire” their competitor Microsoft into revamping their OS to follow some of the work flow that had been established in the earlier OSX cats.

PC is Wal-Mart furniture; affordable, plain and serviceable. Mac is the IKEA of the computing world, you’re paying for sleekness, prestige and reputation more than you are the device and you’ll love it for what it is while PC fans mock you for what it’s not. That’s okay though, it’s not for everyone, but  it is for you.

This is where my thoughts on the latest reveal from the techno-wizard & owner of 90% of the world’s black turtle neck sweaters, Steve Jobs begins.

Let’s get the first element to ridicule out of the way: iPad, seriously you picked that name?

You’ve already been mocked about it years before you actually put it into use (search for Madtv iPad on youtube). iTab or iSlate would’ve done your product more justice but hey, the product itself is all one big gamble. It’s going to pay huge dividends if the company has planned ahead.

The bust potential must be acknowledged first however. The iPad is a lateral move in terms of a product for Apple, they have the iPod touch for music & video, the iPhone for communication, basic computing via apps & web browsing.  If you need to do some heavy lifting in terms of content creation, storage and all of the rest, you can grab a Macbook or one of their desktop machines and get to work.  It’s a tablet, tablets have been around for a while with little success in terms of shifting the market. If the iPad is about entering a dogfight with a tablet PC this thing  is all bark and little bite.

What’s so special about the iPad?

Set aside the hyperbole and think of it in the same way that Apple has gone about the design their products; they aim for sleek, simple and focused application.  The iPad is not here to compete with the tablet PC or take away from their own share of the laptop market. They aren’t trying to sell you a glorified iPod (no matter how I like to think of it as such), this is Mac’s gauntlet being thrown into the print arena of the content delivery market.

Yes Amazon Kindle, you should find a new pair of pants because Mac is gunning for you.

We are witnessing a branching of the evolutionary tree of the newspaper and a great number of traditionally printed media. What looks like a clever cash grabbing side step is actually a calculated move to further develop a shifting market. With papers, magazines and books moving into digital distribution to stay afloat, publishers will need to find new avenues to increase their subscribers and continue to create revenue. Part of that strategy has to include championing  new technology.

Apple is trying to muscle its way into position to be the go-to tool for reading digital material.

From my perspective, this is the new frontier for comics, the App store already has apps by the big boys, Marvel & DC in place to to lead the way. All that needs to be done is the the development of the content, a proper network for distribution that favors the little guys (Graphic.ly), the adoption of the technology by the mainstream (it’s Apple, it’s gonna happen) & the patience to see it all through.

If  I were an indie company looking for a way to forge ahead and something to focus upon to maybe get some funding (hey that kind of is me), this is exactly the time and place I’d want to be in; a spot where there is new technology, new techniques and new niches to find for something old to become new again.

Now if they can handle the issue with flash and keep the basic capabilities of it’s older siblings (video / audio / gaming),  Sony could very well be next in the cross-hairs (PSP, you could be better).

A change of heart?

The prospect of all of  this has me re-thinking my anti-Mac slant ever so slightly because they’re doing things that even I think are cool enough to pay attention to. I still can’t see myself ponying up the price for the iPad but I’m not going to say never. If they come out with a 32 inch wall mounted version of the iPad, I call dibs on the name iOverpaid.

On the Write Trax – Sounds Like Inspiration

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Confession time.

I haven’t done a lot of writing over the past few months which is a violation of my goal to do a little bit of writing each day. In my desire to get back into the saddle, I began to rummage through my notes to see what I could develop into a small project to get the juices flowing.  I came across some notes titled “Within Earshot” – if the title sounds familiar it’s a direct lift from a song / snippet by recording artist Kenna.

Immediately I was reminded of a tip from Mike C. about finding inspiration in the very same playlist you’re using while you work.  The gist was to pay attention to the titles in your playlist and pick one to develop a story idea out of.

That’s not new, dude.

You’re right, it isn’t and it’s very likely the story you get from it will be either. This exercise is less about the product and more about the process. You want to develop the habit of piecing together your ideas and shaping them into narratives and then full on stories. These stories may never see the light of day in the final forms you give them for the project. However there’s a good bet that more refined versions of characters & concepts may creep their way into the work that does make it out into public view.

What did you come up with?

I’ll with you the nuts and bolts of  “Within Earshot”, it’s not much but you can at least see how far you can get from a song title.

This particular one brought about 2 different projects technically but at a point I began to experiment with splicing them into one.

One involved a sort Rip Van Winkle situation, life and the people in it sucked so bad for one guy he tries to run away from it only to fall into a coma and sleep through the apocalypse. He wakes up  to find everything he liked and loathed are gone and tries his best to adjust to life as it has become.

Not much orginality there but enough to play with.

The other was  something slightly more original. The story involved someone coming to grips with possibility that their whole life has been a fantasy of their best friend. Yes, an imaginary friend lasts way past the sell-by date and becomes self-aware.

That’s it, one song gives me two stories and enough material to play around with as a daily excercise.

You try it.

Pull out the mp3 player, go through your playlist and take the title of the song that catches your eye and get to writing. Write until you feel you can’t add any more to the idea and then move to another song on the playlist.

Let’s do this.

Please allow myself to introduce myself.

Yes, it’s been that long that I feel the need to tell you who I am and what I aim to do with this site.

My name is Ron Williams. For the curious, I’m a designer by trade but to be honest, I do many things well and desire to be great at more than a few of the things I do. I have a blog, this blog, it’s meant to be a cross between your average arts and entertainment site focused heavily on an old passion I wish to recapture (comics) but mixed with some newer elements.

These elements are equal parts idea incubator, collaborative community and educational tool for those like myself and the generations behind me.

Say what?

You’ve read correctly, this blog is about arts & entertainment, it is intended to serve as an idea incubator, collaborative community and educational resource. The mission is in the name: INKWEST  – Inspiration Necessity Knowledge Wisdom Effort Strength Talent – an inner quest to find your next level.

What does that mean?

For me, it’s a mandate to take something I’d like to do, but mostly end up complaining about and actively seeking out the means to learn it, understand it and make the attempt myself. For you, well that’s up to you to decide,  want you to join in and see what you can make of it.

How it (should) work:

At a basic level there will be content centered around arts & entertainment. Not just news and rumors but articles providing insight to the makings of some of these projects. There will be reviews, lists, rants, raves and perhaps even interviews.

We’ll take it further by seeking out information on how to go about doing some of these things for ourselves. Everything from how to organize ourselves, find others to collaborate with, project management, property development and the tools available to us to help get the job done.

While we’re at it, we’ll set up our own properties and use our own community to help develop them.

This is done with the aim not to just to have an awesome end product  but to really understand and embrace the journey towards that destination.

Where to begin?

Lets begin with the truth; a novel approach to how to build things. I’ve been trying to do this as a one man team, learning as I go along. That’s not going to work. Collaborative communities need more than one collaborative member. It’s time to open this bad boy up, develop some membership criteria and then a form and well you can get an idea of the rest.

Writers: I need writers of every skill level, if you have a background in education you are especially needed.Yes, even blog writers.

Artists: This stands for visual artists, while much of my focus has been on comics, there are other forms that need to be explored and exposed to open eyes. The idea is to establish that any medium can be utilized to tell a story. So photographers, traditional artists,  digital artists, sequential artists, you’re all needed. Again, if you have a background in education you’re definitely needed.

Vocalists / Musicians: What’s any project without a soundtrack? Boring. We need to involve music in this community because it is another form of story telling. So we need some experienced musicians to come along and help others understand this integral element. Yeah, educators welcome.

Film makers: Can’t leave you out, from animation to live action you have to marry text, visuals & audio into a project and then push the envelope.

Share what you know and what you’d like to know.

For this to work we have to share what we can and be willing to learn the rest for ourselves. Let’s do this!

State of the [Dis]Union – What Now?

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Table of contents for State of the [Dis]Union

  1. State of the [Dis]Union.
  2. State of the [Dis]Union – That’s Life.
  3. State of the [Dis]Union – What Now?

Yeah, I know.

I should be ashamed of myself for not posting anything in months. As you may know I had originally set out to chronicle my effort to get into comics whether it was with the big boys or self-publishing. That’s still the plan but I’ve also had other aspirations that are vying for my attention such as a clothing line, Wear Wolf Apparel and a day gig as a designer. The economy being the way it is, makes it more difficult to focus on personal projects but I have done what I could where I could sacrificing things along the way.

So what have I learned?

The subject manner of this blog could use an adjustment to increase the likelihood of me making a post at least once a month. I believe moving it into a wider variety of pop culture & creativity could do the trick. I’m almost positive my take on movies and television will get a response or two. I may even chime in on music even though my taste in music sucks. I’ll also make an effort to keep you informed of all of my ventures and not just in the realm of comic books. What I’ll do to set myself apart is this, whenever possible, I will share my ideas & feelings as well as related articles about how we can be doing the things we love for ourselves rather than allowing the big studios to have all the fun and make all the profit. If it sounds cool, stay on board, I thank you in advance.

Speaking of comics…

A while ago I posted a form on this site, asking for people to join me on my comic project. Like the rest f the blog it had been set aside and nearly forgotten. A couple of weeks ago I was contacted via the contact form and was introduced to an artist, Gilbert Murillo and a writer Nicholas Titus, whom both are being patient with me as I try my best to alter my output to get them the materials they need. They deserve a shout out and more.

Did I mention you should be buying my stuff?

Well, you should. It’s not very often you’ll have the opportunity to meet a up and coming clothing designer. It’s also not very often that you can be the first to have a new brand before everyone else. So if you’re that type that needs it before everyone else, I have an item for sale, come make an order. If you are on Facebook, look me up and also join the Wear Wolf Apparel fanpage!

Wear Wolf Apparel on Facebook

This blog is still ugly.

I think I have a solution, so if you happen to visit and notice the site is acting weird, that’s probably me trying to install a new look. We’ll get it right, you’ll see.

What sort of Mickey Mouse @#^! is this? Disney + Marvel – It’s not so bad.

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

What sort of Mickey Mouse @#^! is this?

This was enough to get me to come running out from under my rock wondering just what happened to the world while I was away. It was Monday so I expected some sort of buzz-worthy event to smack me in the face but Marvel sold to Disney? The end is nigh!

I don't Frank Castle would approve.

I don't think Frank Castle would approve.

Hold up, pump the breaks.

Like many things that throw you for a loop, a night to sleep on it adds perspective. This assimilation into the Evil Empire may just be what the doctor ordered.  Marvel is no doubt unwieldy at times and though they have taken great strides to keep it in some sort of shape organizationally, it’s been a mixed bag in terms of product. They’ve slowly developed a web model to compensate for the fact that their audience has shifted from printed books to digital distribution, they’re ahead of the newspaper industry but not at the edge of innovative practices. Disney has been more successful in adapting and adopting new technology. This is key because Marvel needs fresh ideas, they need a refreshed vision, I’ll come out and say it, they need Disney.

If you know me personally, you know that I loathe Disney in its current form. I had been a big fan growing up but as I got older I began to firmly believe that they have made some  deal with Satan to pump weak, saccharine garbage into the world. What? Yes, Disney has always been ultra candy coated, but the one thing they brought was a sense of grand imagination, short of Pixar, where has this been for the last 20 years? They killed 2d animation(!), delivered uneven results with their motion pictures, fell off with their music & lost their way with their television programming. It’s been manufactured retreads ad nauseum giving us Britney, Christina, Justin, Lindsey, Shia, Miley, High School Musical & The Jonas brothers and many more… Now that I think about it, Disney needs Marvel…
